My motto is buy things I love and they will fit beautifully in my home. The worst thing you can do is to decorate your home to please anyone other than yourself. You will end up hating it, I promise!
Now does this mean that I don't second guess some (all) of my purchases? Absolutely not. Does this mean that EVERYTHING I love finds a way to fit into my home? Not necessarily, and that's okay (that's why you keep receipts)! Do I have any decorations in my house that I don't love? No. If I can surround myself with things I love, then why wouldn't I?
That being said, not all inspiration comes from within. I love going to furniture and home decor stores for inspiration, "shopping" doesn't always mean buying! Some of my favorite stores include Montgomerys, World Market and Pier 1 all located in Sioux Falls. Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and IKEA are some of my favorite webpages and magazines to browse and I do so often...I find a lot of the PB furniture pieces and decorative items are easily recreated at a fraction of the cost! Consider that next time you decide to spend $800 on an occasional table!
Now I realize this piece isn't a perfect match to the PB example, but you'll get the picture....
It's not yet varnished, but I think this table is gorgeous,
okay maybe not the best in my garage....

So we drug it into the bathroom to "stage" a photo shoot.
Pottery Barn-esque for a fraction of the price....4% to be exact. Seriously.
A lot of Pottery Barn has a beachy feeling...this mantle reminds me of that.
It was purchased at the Restore, spray painted cream and aged with stain and sandpaper.
I reaaallllyy want to hang it above our bed,
but Aaron rrreeeaalllyy doesn't want it to fall on his face.
I guess I can appreciate that ;)

At our Public library you can buy bundles of BHG for $1. The issues aren't current, but the pages are still filled with inspiration. You can also sign up online to receive catalogs from PB, Crate & Barrel, etc. Get a binder, fill it with page protectors and make an inspiration book. The next time you page through a magazine and see an idea instead of marking it and tossing the magazine into a pile (which you may never look at again), rip the page out! Slide it into one of the page protectors and then you won't have to wonder where you saw that pretty table setting, unique craft idea or beautiful curtains-they are all in one book! I add to and page through my binder all the time-it's so fun to dream about your future dream home!
Cabinet door with leftover vinyl pieces...still need to add mounting hardware and maybe coat hooks?
What inspires you? Don't be afraid to be creative in your decorating; try something different, you might surprise yourself. You can always bring something home, try it and return it if it doesn't work...but how silly is it to sit and wonder if you could pull something off??
Carpe Diem.
Noelle
