When I was a kid (wow that just instantly made me feel old) I spent my summer chasing kittens in the barn, climbing the apple tree for a delicious snack, digging in the dirt, riding bike and playing with my dolls. My best memories are of the simplest things.
The big barn where most of my cat chasing took place.
I would climb in the hay loft and search all around until I found the litters of new kittens...my dad calls me the "Cat charmer."
This dwarf apple tree bears the most delicious apples in the world :)
What kid didn't enjoy the simple pleasure of digging in the dirt?!? I get to stick in these pictures because they fit under the "photography" part of my blog...okay, mainly because my nephew is a DOLL!!!
"I promise, I haven't been playing in the dirt..."
Cute lil buns!!
"I'm having so much fun with my tractors!"
Look at this MESS!!
Our summer has included lots of bike rides, soccer, fishing, swimming, baseball and some arts and crafts. Today was the perfect day to fly a kite and the kids have some huge kites that fly super high, but the 4 year old was having trouble keeping hers in the air. I suggested something that I used to do with the daycare kids...
"Walmart bag kites"
All you need is a plastic bag and some string, but you can get creative and add crepe paper tails, pieces of construction paper, and a toilet paper roll for a reel - the sky is the limit!
They don't fly super high, but it is perfect for littler kids...they enjoy running with the kite bouncing behind them!
Big kids like them, too. We had 5 homemade kites in the air, but I had forgotten my camera.
I even made one :) actually, that is the one I made.
So then we decided to get a little more fancy...we should have stuck with simple.
Kite fail: cardboard box framed kite
Even though we trimmed away much of the cardboard, we still couldn't get it to fly.
We did have a lot of fun making it though!
It was a little disappointing!
This is the "reel"...just rolled up cardboard with string wrapped around it. Littler kids don't need much string, it's just too difficult for them to keep it from tangling, and it really doesn't help the kite fly any better.
I suggest just tying a length or string around their wrist and letting them run wild!
The cardboard fail tent WAS fun to SSMMMAASSSHHH!!
Nicely done!
We had such a fun afternoon, full of giggles and smiles and it only cost us a few art supplies and a bunch of scotch tape. The clean up is a breeze compared to most art projects because there is no glue involved :) I love simple clean up!!
Something else we enjoyed this summer was using a projector for an outdoor movie. We put up a sheet, hooked up speakers and a computer, made popcorn and popped in "Muppet Treasure Island." We had a screen the size of a full fitted sheet and the resolution was AMAZING! It was so fun! We are looking forward to doing it again this weekend...it reminds me of the drive-in movie days. What simple pleasures make up your summer?
