Before we decided to build something (I wanted glass doors, and am a little daunted by the idea of framing glass), I wanted to shop around. I had a few specifics in mind...
I wanted it to be black.
I wanted it to have glass doors.
It could be no more than 32 inches tall so that it could also serve as a sofa table.
It had to be less than $300.
Reasonable enough, right? As luck would have it I found a piece of furniture that fit the bill at the first store we checked out, Unclaimed Freight. It was actually a console, but you would never know the difference (and it gives this piece versatility). It was marked down from $540 to WAIT...did I read that price right?? $167??? Way under budget! The only downside-it had some hideous frosted/striped/awful glass in the doors.
I decided to "think it over" and left to check out Pier 1 and World Market...the pieces they had were either too expensive, too big....just not what I was looking for and honestly I knew I wanted the console the minute I walked OUT of Unclaimed Freight. So we returned to UF loaded the buffet into the car and headed home. Before we went and bought replacement glass, we wanted to be sure it fit into our home.
It was perfect!
The finished product.
We headed to Lowes to buy glass, I think it cost about $14 and they cut it to size for you. The only sketchy part is that you have to clean it very carefully and thoroughly because the glass dust (from the cutting process) can scratch the glass. Aaron replaced the glass in about 5 minutes and we had our pretty new buffet, and $100 to spare. Wooohooo!!! I feel a little lame getting excited about furniture, but this was awesome!!
Do you have any furniture or decorative items you use for something other than its intended purpose? A chest as a coffee table...a ladder repurposed as a shelf...drapes hung for a fancy shower curtain...a pedestal as a plant stand? The possibilities are endless!
